The CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) is designed to support the development of knowledge and practical skills required to provide person-centred support in disability and community care environments. This nationally recognised qualification focuses on assisting individuals with daily living activities, promoting independence, and supporting wellbeing in a respectful and safe manner.

Throughout the course, students engage in a combination of knowledge-based learning and workplace-based training. You will develop skills in communication, working with diverse individuals, and following individualised support plans. The course also covers safe work practices, ethical responsibilities, and supporting people with varying needs.

A key feature of this qualification is the focus on practical application. Students are required to complete workplace-based learning in a real workplace environment, allowing them to apply their knowledge and demonstrate skills in line with training package requirements.

The CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support qualification reflects the role of individuals in the community, home or residential care setting who work under supervision and delegation as a part of a multi-disciplinary team, following an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.

These individuals take responsibility for their own outputs within the scope of their job role and delegation. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

Knowledge-Based Learning

Build your knowledge through structured classroom learning supported by flexible online access.

The knowledge components of this course are delivered through face-to-face classes, supported by our Learning Management System (LMS). This blended approach allows you to engage in trainer-led sessions while accessing learning materials and completing activities in a flexible and supported environment.

Includes:

  • Face-to-face classroom learning with trainer guidance
  • Access to a secure Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Digital learning materials, activities, and knowledge-based assessments
  • Support from trainers and assessors with industry experience
  • Ongoing monitoring of student progress, with academic support provided where required

Workplace-Based Learning

Apply your knowledge in real workplace settings and develop practical skills.

Workplace-based learning is a mandatory component of this qualification and is required to meet training package requirements. Students must complete practical learning and assessment activities in a real workplace environment relevant to community services.

Includes:

  • Placement in a disability support or community care setting
  • Practical tasks and assessments aligned to unit requirements
  • A minimum of 245 hours of workplace-based learning (this duration reflects Risen Star College’s delivery approach, providing extended exposure to real workplace environments to support the development and demonstration of competency in the complex and evolving community services sector

Risen Star College provides guidance and support to assist students in identifying suitable workplace opportunities. Where applicable, the College may have arrangements with host organisations to support workplace learning.

Pre-Placement Requirements

Prior to commencing workplace-based learning, students may be required to obtain the following (as applicable to the workplace):

  • Working with Children Check (Blue Card)
  • NDIS Worker Screening Clearance
  • National Police Check
  • Evidence of required vaccinations (e.g. Influenza, COVID-19, as required by the workplace)
  • Training in infection control and manual handling

Disability Support Worker

Provide person-centred support to individuals living with disability. This role may involve assisting with daily living activities, supporting independence, and helping clients participate in community and social activities.

Personal Care Assistant (Disability Support)

Support individuals with personal care tasks such as hygiene, mobility, and daily routines. This role focuses on maintaining dignity, comfort, and wellbeing in a care environment.

Community Support Worker

Work within community services to assist individuals in accessing support services, participating in programs, and maintaining independence in their daily lives.

NDIS Support Worker

Provide support to participants under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), assisting with individual goals, daily activities, and community engagement in line with support plans.

Residential Support Worker

Support individuals living in residential or supported accommodation settings. Responsibilities may include assisting with daily routines, promoting independence, and contributing to a safe and supportive living environment.

Home Care Support Worker

Provide support to individuals in their own homes, assisting with daily living tasks, personal care, and community participation. This role focuses on promoting independence and supporting individuals to remain in their home environment while maintaining their health, wellbeing, and quality of life.

This qualification is presented in an accommodating and flexible blended learning approach, integrating self-paced online learning with scheduled workplace training. This delivery method enables students to manage study around personal and work commitments, and acquire the actual care skills in genuine care environments.

Components include:

Self-paced online study via our secure eLearning system
15 nationally recognised units (9 core + 6 electives)

Trainer support via phone, email, or video conferencing
Monitoring of your progress and frequent meetings to ensure you’re on track

You will cover the theory units prior to or at the same time as your practical placement, so you will be thoroughly prepared for actual care settings.

Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

Work Placement (Vocational Placement)

Workplace learning is an important part of this qualification, where you get to put your skills into practice in actual aged care and/or disability support environments under the guidance of trained professionals.

Includes:

120 hours of compulsory vocational placement
Undertaken in an accredited aged care, disability, or community care facility
Supervision by a trained support worker or supervisor
Third-party observations and assessments to assess workplace competence
Support can be provided by Oxford College in finding an acceptable placement, if necessary

Before placement, students are required to supply:

A current National Police Check
A Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) Check (state equivalent)
Evidence of relevant vaccinations, such as COVID-19 (as needed by the host facility)
